On the Creation of Arts

The Uniqueness of Chinese painting lies in its emphasis on the manifestation of artistic spirit , expressiveness and pursuit of the idealistic art . Just because of this, no real and noble art creation could be made overnight , nor could it be made in a hurry or be forced and squeezed out . The worldly conception of art creation regards art as common things which could be reached right at hand . Speaking from my experiences, the ideal psychological and physical conditions in Chinese painting is to be free from worldly fame and benefits . Only with no worldly values to seek , can one put his mind at ease ; that is the free-mindedness . The ideal physical conditions means that an artist should never live on his paintings , only so could the artist perform joyfully his wonders . And only the art created under such circumstances could be free of the worldliness and distortions . Its artistic temperament would be noble ; its artistic taste would be high and significant , meaning the paintings created by hands but rooted in heart.

I have visited many mountains and rivers , ancient trees and great cliffs . They all said to me that only those unselfish and daring artists who are most devoted and open-minded could get into them without any hindrance in receiving the aspiration and spirit from them . Artists of this kind could free themselves from the dull mingling of strokes , lines and space in their paintings.

I love those mountain rocks and , without them, the universe would lose its grandness and support , and there would not be any existence in this world . If the grandiosity of the universe embraces the whole time and space , then the conveyer of the time and space is those mountain rocks . I praise them for they are far more diverse in their forms than any other beings of the universe ; I admire their noble nature of such open-mindedness that they compete with no one ; Of such calm and serenity that they could brave any storm . They are the representation of spirit : endurance , strength and eternity in my paintings . To them I have an everlasting respect.

There is spirit in the universe . That different forms of different existence in the universe by its nature is the result of the formation of various substances in different quality and forms . Human beings are also so without exception . In this sense, there is no essential differences between human beings and rocks , waters, soils and trees. So I hold the view that man is nothing more than trees and rocks.Trees and rocks also have themselves souls and wills as human beings.

Mother nature is eternal and unfathomably profound , too . It is boundless and noblest , untouched by the hand of man . When I gave myself to the ravines and valleys , I have grasped the chance to get so intimate with those rocks . They revealed to me the history of man in its scrolls : man¨s past and future . They enlightened me to the truth that there is existence grown out of the emptiness and the interdependency between voidness and colors . They said : Human civilization was just a bunch of narrow-minded knowledge of up and down , coming and going, big and small , much and little which are based on man¨s view of the world . Man could live with and understand the universe only when he could overcome himself and shake off his own weakness , but I was always confused about it. Is there any possibility that man can cast off his suspicious views towards each other, overcome and surpass himself in the universe ?

The lofty artistic conception represents the essence of art , the distilled temperament and noble spirit ,while the minor and personal taste manifests nothing but the superficialities on the surface . Therefore, the art creation of noble taste would never be achieved if one failed to free himself of the bondage of naturalism . When one addicts himself to the temporal interest in the art creation , how could he get into and understand the nobility of the decent art?

Truth is not necessary in the art sphere , but compassion and sentiments are indispensable . Art in its essence is spiritual and idealistic . There is no boundary in art . It can reach anywhere in your mind . In my art creation life , I have been far away from the bustling of cars and crowds of people . There were no such things as towers and pagodas , nor were there the boats adrift on the lake . In a word, I am fond of drawing pure natural scenery without any man-made trace in my paintings . I enjoy such solicitude because I favor the serenity and solitary of the ravines , in which water flows and trees grow naturally. And I enjoy this kind of naturalness , with winds coming and rains going through the stones and frosted trees . So for my art , I have already known that "It is going against the current tendency. However , I would never belittle myself to buy more luxurious paint to draw peony" which would definitely cater to the popular interest . The real art by its essence is incompatible with the worldly value . I have never evaluated my artistic creation with money . Whether they would worth a penny or not will never matter to me .
